Companies that have an open innovation business model encourage the inflow of external knowledge, innovative developments, optimised technologies in order to accelerate internal innovation.
Focus on 3 pillars
Domains urgently in need of an open innovation approach are:
Sustainability
Whether it’s achieving your net-zero targets or ensuring you are ESG compliant, moving towards a more sustainable future is impossible to achieve without meaningful collaboration. Startups with wider international connections are proven to achieve faster innovation & innovative development with a higher company-wide impact than that of an isolated company.
Performance in sustainable innovation favourably correlates with economic innovation performance.
Industry 4.0
Digitalisation is an integral part of our lives. And the best is yet to come. Companies understand the promise of Industry 4.0 and are constantly on the lookout for new external solutions to make that promise come true.
Carbon renewal
To fight climate change, the use of fossil resources needs to be cut drastically. Companies are encouraged to phase out fossil resources and to use renewable carbon instead. But how that needs to be organised on a large scale, with which technologies, is still a challenging task for businesses. A major advantage of fast scaling companies who chose to explore open innovation is the ability to take advantage of the newest technologies crucial to bring environmental change to scale.

2. Internal alignment
Do you want to move up the open innovation ladder? A common first step is to engage management. This can be done via a questionnaire or an engaging game.
Don’t forget to formulate your vision, values, and principles for a more open innovation strategy. Have it validated and supported by leadership/C-suite.
Be ready. Define a project plan, planning and project manager. Don’t forget to include a governance structure, design IP strategy, legal agreements, etc.
3. Ecosystem set-up
Define and frame your specific innovation challenge, or challenges. Start looking for external parties, invite them to your ecosystem, engage and learn how they can contribute.
Learn from ecosystem members, share capabilities and/or facilities, start pilots. And certainly, communicate about the results. Internally and externally.
